Update [Dec. 2nd, 2009|08:41 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]
[Current Location |Triton College]
[Current Mood | bored]

Haven't posted in a while. Not much has been going on. I had a week break from class and am back right now, getting bored listening to the teacher teach bad modeling practices.

A few weeks ago, I ended up working on Dad's car again. Last time I worked on it, we did the rear brakes, but left the fronts because the pads were fine. Soon after that, it developed a rubbing/jerking (hehe) noise when slowing down. Turns out a bit of rust grew on the inside of the rotor, causing the noise. Turning just the rotor is a waste without changing the pads, too, so I got under the car and changed everything out. About $50 for the pads and $30 for turning the rotors, which is a bunch less than the $280 that the dealer wanted.

Thanksgiving was the usual affair of eating mostly good food at my aunt's house (what is it with my family making really bad turkey?).

The Saturday afterwards was RnR Thanxgiving at Tara and Pat's house in Cortland, IL. This year was special as The Colonel debuted Acute Boogiemania (can't wait for the eventual CD), my other friends played songs as a band who's name I can't remember, and then Go Bananas! had a 10 year reunion, playing bad punk songs they wrote in high school and practiced for about 4 hours total in all the time since then. Good times were had. I hope YouTube clips will show up.

Yesterday was kinda nice, so I took the time to get the car ready for winter. I put some extra winter gear in a bag in the hatch, found my snow brush, checked my fluids, and put the winter tires on.

I just need to get some cold weather wind shield washer fluid in there, but I've got to wait until I use up all the summer stuff.

So I leave the house for four hours and come home to find this:

[Current Music |The Tossers - Communication and Conviction]

My cousin Andrzej had his first kid a few months ago and they had a baptism for the lil guy on Saturday. The whole family went to the banquet hall afterwards for a purely Polish party (Polish food, live music, dancing, and a bottle of vodka on every table). It was weird going there because I haven't seen most of that side of the family in over five years. Since Andrzej and his sister got married (not to each other; they got married a month apart, though, and I think of the two weddings as one, almost), at least. It was a pretty good time, especially catching up with Jerry, who I was pretty close with when I was in high school.

Today I got my first In Stock Trades order in a long time. I ordered The Immortal Iron Fist Omnibus (I already read the single issues thanks to Miah) and BPRD vol. 11. I was going to get just IIF from Amazon when I preordered L4D2, but it was $8 cheaper at IST. Unfortunately, that put it under the $50 limit for free shipping, so I picked up BPRD also. I came out paying something like $3 more than I would have at Amazon, but I got two books instead of one.
Comics

On top of those two, I should be getting six or seven books from Heavy Ink in a day or two.

Miah mailed me back some of my books and sent along Goon vol. 7. I need to own this series. Dan said he just got vol. 9, so I think I will borrow 8 and 9 from him to find out what happens. I'm trying to think of what I can send Miah to read when I send Goon back. Probably, BPRD, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Boys.

Piggy [Nov. 5th, 2009|11:02 pm]

[Current Music |Colbert Report]

P1030016
I got to take care of Piggy for a few days last week. Piggy is a stuffed animal that the Something Awful motorcycle guys bought and have been handing off while traveling around the country. Surprisingly, he showed up in Chicago a month ago. I got him so I could take him to Champaign and points south.

I picked him up on Thursday from a guy in Chicago. He came home with me and spent most of his time either on the back of my bike or on my comic book shelf.
P1030018
P1030030

Buddy was confused by Pig. First, he was curious, then angry, then tried to have sex with Piggy.
P1030024

The point of getting the Pig is to show him around, but a combination of shitty weather, nothing being around Franklin Park, and the Chicago goons taking care of the touristy sites meant I didn't take him anywhere. On Friday, Andy and I tried to go see Green Jello and I took the little guy along. The show was canceled, however, and I proceeded to get shit-faced instead.

On Monday, I took the Pig down to Champaign. It was a shitty day to do it, but there was nothing better later in the week. Monday was in the mid-50's, so I took the interstate down and tried to keep it above 80 mph to make time. I got cold, but not too bad. It sucked a bit once the sun set, though.

I dropped off the little guy and went by Mikey's place. We went to a new bar called Silver Saints that had good food and, almost as importantly, Magic Hat's #9 beer. We had an early night as Mike had work in the morning, and I took off Tuesday around 10 am.

Tuesday was fucking cold. It was in the low-40's when I left and I doubt it broke 50 at any point in time. I took a back route never really going over 65 mph. Going slower kept me a little warmer, but not much. I made frequent stops, though, and had a "Trucker's Breakfast" at a truck stop (eggs, hashbrowns, and biscuits & gravy). Still, I got really numb fingers that stayed cold for hours after I got home.

Long Time No Update [Oct. 24th, 2009|05:22 pm]

[Current Mood | sick]

Well, I haven't updated in a month or so. Mostly, because the weather has gotten cold and I stopped going out.

To make up for the shit weather and lack of rent, I splurged on video games. I got me an Xbox 360:
P1020899
I got a pretty decent deal on it. Just after MS dropped their prices on the system, they put up a $50 rebate. Also, the place I got it from was giving out $50 gift cards. It's an expensive hobby, though. With the Xbox, I got The Orange Box (HL2, ep1, ep2, TF2, and Portal) and a battery pack, which took up most of the $50 gift card. I then avoided buying a $100 wireless adapter by following super-technical instructions on how to turn my old router into an antenna. A few days later I picked up L4D to play with some friends (another $30) and bought the new map ($7). I still want to get another controller (at least $30), TMNT: Turtles in Time, and Streets of Rage 2. Plus, L4D2 is coming out shortly ($60 with a $10 gift card if I preorder). Youch. If you're on Xbox Live, hit me up at SrWapo.

A couple weeks after getting the Xbox, I went to a show with Dan and his friend Uma. It was the Alkaline Trio show at The Congress that was part of Riot Fest. We saw The Arrivals open (good as always), Pegboy (okay), and Screeching Weasel (a total blast that left my body sore for days). We conveniently left before the Trio came on. Instead, we went to a tiny bar that Pegboy was playing with Off With Their Heads. We got early enough to avoid cover, heard an awesome set by Off With Their Heads (and grabbed a CD), and left before seeing Pegboy a second time. We headed to the awesome Cobra Lounge for a free Teenage Bottlerocket show, but there were a lot of cops outside and we went home instead.

Between my free Xbox Live trial coming to an end and listening to tons of good music, I broke down and got an Amazon and an InterPunk order. Music wise, I picked up another Off With Their Heads CD and older Gaslight Anthem and Lucero albums. I was also recently given a Deathset album and heard Tegan and Sara's new album. All in all, good music. Deathset took me a couple listens to get into but it's deceptively complex and full of energy. The new Tegan and Sara album contains a lot more pop than I was expecting, but it's also fun. Everything else is just plain good ol' rock and roll.

I also got around to picking up Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with Skottie Young's awesome artwork:
P1020898
It was pretty good, but I already more-or-less know the story from the famous movie (the comic is based on the original books, so it's a bit different). However, I'm really excited to read the next volumes. I've always wanted to read the Oz books, but never found the time. This is my chance.

Right around the time I got my Amazon order in (Monday), Dad and I tackled the rear brakes on his Kia Sportage:
P1020885
It was a fairly easy job, but it took a couple trips to get the rotors turned and we had to leave the car up on jack stands overnight. We still need to do the fronts, but the pads still have some life left. I just hope they last the winter so we don't have to do it in the cold. I also changed the oil on the Galant a week before this. I wish I was fast and good enough to actually get money for working on cars, but I guess I have to settle with spending less money than hiring a mechanic.

We took on the brake job because the weather turned warm for a few days. The next morning I woke up with a sore throat. I've been under the weather since then, mostly with a sore throat, a slight runny nose, and the occasional cough. The worst has been sitting at home during the awesome weather.

On Wednesday, I took my first class in SolidWorks. That day was a total waste of time as we learned absolutely nothing involving how the program itself works. I feel it's going to be a really long class for me because a lot of the class will focus on proper 3D modeling techniques, which I am more-or-less an expert in. I just need to know the program interface.

Since I last updated, I got a call from Daxcon about a possible position in Minneapolis, which I slowly got excited about. This week, though, I found out that Daxcon didn't get the contract. So, back to having no job prospects on the horizon. Joy!

I've been rereading books and comics all summer and have just about run out. I think I'm going to renew my old (and very long expired) library card on Monday. I have a couple things I'm going to check out first, but recommendations are always welcome.

Besides that, I've been reading my "weekly" comics that I've been ordering through Heavy Ink. They're a pretty good company now that I have everything setup. I pay shipping, but the way I have it set up, I'm still paying less than at Acme. Unfortunately, I need at least four comics before they ship and the order doesn't come in until Tuesday or Wednesday the week after, so I'm two to three weeks behind. I can speed things up, but that'd cost me more money. They also make buying comics too easy and I've ended up with some things I wouldn't have otherwise.

Here's my ghetto fix of the two holes in my exhaust on my motorcycle.

1) Hit the hole with a wire wheel hooked up to the drill to clean off the rust.

2) Lay down some gold spraypaint over the clean metal.
P1020876

3) Put a bead of RTV sealant around the hole. The sealant wasn't coming out of the tube, so this part didn't work as well as I would have liked.
P1020878

4) Cover with a piece of aluminum.
P1020880

5) Cover that with another strip of aluminum and clamp down as hard as possible.
P1020882

6) Repeat on the other side.

Ghetto as hell, but cheaper than $300 for a new exhaust.

[Current Music |Dethklok - Dethalbum II]

So, I woke up this morning, ate some left over pizza, and hopped on my motorcycle. My first real ride in two and a half weeks. I took off for downtown Chicago, rode north up Lake Shore Drive, and came back on side streets. Felt nice. Did about 50 miles. I'm thinking about redoing the ride tomorrow night after the sun sets for added fun.

I found a small hole in my exhaust on the right side in front of the muffler. I will fix that ghetto style for now. It's the last thing I can think of to get rid the bad noises my bike's been making.

I then rode my bicycle after taking two days off. To make up for the laziness, I went about six miles instead of five. I'm starting to feel better on the bike and hope to get more saddle time before it gets too cold. I will need to get some long work out pants, though. The shorts won't work for much longer.

I was linked to Mr. Deity yesterday, a show that document's The Deity's work at creating the universe. Short and witty episodes make it a fun watch.

For the last week, Against Me!'s Miami and Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time have been alternating in my head. Argh!

I changed the oil in my car by myself for the first time today. I also managed to make a mess of things on the garage floor. Plus, I had to spend close to $20 on a socket to get the oil filter off, which pretty much eliminated any savings I was getting doing it myself. Go me! I rotated the tires, too, but I didn't adjust their pressure. I'll do that tomorrow when people aren't sleeping so the air compressor doesn't piss anyone off too much.

Four back issues of Amazing Spider-Man, four back issues of Deadpool (still looking for #10), and new issues of The Authority, The Boys, and Wednesday comics. Plus a free issue of Moon Knight Saga which I will flip through and never look at again. More comics to come every week or two depending on how many come out.

I picked up two more issues of Amazing Spider-Man and an issue of Deadpool yesterday. I've also become a dork with my new bicycle helmet.

Okay, gonna go ride my bike and drive to VW for an oil filter.

Today I spent my day dealing with my bank, insurance company, DMV, credit card company, Pay Pal, and a few other miscellaneous companies trying to change my address. My bank was pleasant and easy, my insurance company will take a week to get my information from the other branch (don't we have computers for these things these days?), the DMV is a soul crushing experience, and I've changed my address for my CC twice now (hopefully it'll stick this time). Oh, and Sprint seems to think my address is: FRANKLIN PARK, Franklin Park, IL. I've changed that three times now online. I don't really care as I've signed up for paperless billing with them.

I also updated my resume, Monster, and CareerBuilder. I like how when I upload a new resume, I need to redo ALL my information.

There's a few more things I need to change, but I either need a license or a credit card to take care of them, so I need to wait 'til tomorrow.

As I mentioned yesterday, I moved most of my stuff two days ago. I've spent my time since then trying to get organized in my new room.

Here's almost all of my stuff packed up and some of it already moved into my car:
P1020810

And the empty living room that is left over:
P1020812

Filling Miah's van with two rooms worth of furniture was a small feat of Tetris-based physics.
P1020813
P1020814
(I like the multiple chairs in the passenger seat.)

My car took the bulk of the "media" I've bought over the years and other small things.
P1020815
This is the second carful that I've driven up to Chicago. I've still got my kitchen to clean out.

Then, we drove down IL-24, I-55, and I-294 for a while.
P1020818
P1020831

And my room at the moment:
When you walk in:
P1020839
Dresser in the foreground. Most of the stuff on top is going to go away in a bit. The shelves in the back are holding my DVDs, CDs, video games, and books. There's a shelf of Absolutes on the bottom for added weight to prevent tip overs. The closet to the left has become a mini-office where I've put my filing cabinet and office supplies. I'm also going to store my PS2 and GameCube in there.

To the left:
P1020840
That's where I'm going to keep my comics. Optimus Prime and my Fast are keeping watch on top. I also hooked up my computer speakers, but they're too close together to get the stereo sound I'm used to. Still, better than running my laptop speakers all the time.

I've whittled down the boxes of leftovers.
P1020842
It's six boxes of books, CDs, and movies and three long boxes of comics (one of which is full of things I want to sell). I actually threw away a box full of homework from college (and a notebook from High School English). What can I say: I'm a pack-rat. I need to figure out where to store this.

My TV in L's room:
P1020841
The TV is comically huge in there, but the bigger base gives her more room for books. She caught the bug and is cleaning out junk. I spent a couple hours with her throwing away CD cases and pseudo-organizing her CD binder.

Stuff left to do:
Put away winter clothes.
Weed out old dress shirts.
Hang pictures on the wall.
Drive to Peoria Monday to clean and bring the last of my kitchen supplies.
Drive my motorcycle back to Franklin Park.
Change my address with DMV, credit card, bank, and a million other places.
Fix Mom's printer.
Clean/organize garage.
Fix bike.
Give the car an oil change.
Go car shopping with L.
Fix the Galant.
Put together Poland photo book for the folks.

This shit never ends.

Seeing as I'm back in the room I had in High School, here's music I loved in High School.

I'm cross posting from another forum, so please excuse the brevity. I'll do a more detailed update tomorrow.

Done moving, though I'm still organizing things and deciding what to keep out and what will be banished to the back of the closet in boxes.

Miah and I managed to pack a two bedroom apartment into the back of a large van. Sadly, most of the furniture I own is shitty Ikea flat-pack, but it helps with moving. We squeezed the too large couch down the too narrow stairs and avoided dropped my heavy as hell TV. My sister is stealing the TV, which Frank and I got up into her room only putting the TV down on my leg twice and almost killing Frank on the stairs. If I need to move that fucker again, it's getting rolled down the stairs and getting lit on fire at the bottom.

I need to drive back down on Monday to clean up the old apartment a bit and get my kitchen stuff. I am getting my mom to help, so the cleaning part is half done already.

I've packed a whole bunch of stuff today.

These boxes are in addition to the other six file boxes and four long boxes that I've moved.
P1020801
I've got the rest of my movies books and comics. I've also packed up the rest of my video games (PS2, games, controllers, Guitar Hero guitars), my computer speakers (taken off the wall, dusted for the first time in forever, and wrapped up nice), and, er, toys (Hot Wheels, Donatello (the Ninja Turtle), and Optimus Prime). In back is a decent pile of wooden boards from three Ikea bookcases that I took apart. The last one is screwed together extra good and will need to stay intact during the move.

I did underestimate how many CDs I have (or how much space DVDs take up). This is the left over.
P1020803

I also messed around in my giant toolbox which contains computer hardware and cables and shit like that. Mostly I made room so I can later put away speaker wire and network stuff and things like that. Honestly, it's way too big of a box now that I got rid of my desktop and don't really need to mess around inside of computers. I should get rid of the tons of cables and old manuals and use the box for actual tools.

Miah and I just came back from seeing Inglourious Basterds. If I were to sum up the plot, it'd be "fuck you, Nazis!" Tarantino has tons of witty dialog and periods of intense action, but he's getting carried away by hearing his characters speak. Compared to Death Proof, though, the characters have their own voices instead of just channeling Tarantino. I definitely could have used a bit less talking and more scalping of nazis. I did like the ending, though.

On the Tarantino scale, I'd put it between Death Proof and Kill Bill.

Spoiler: This movie is not historically accurate.

EDIT
For clarity:
1) Pulp Fiction
2) Kill Bill
3) Reservoir Dogs (tie)
3) Inglourious Bastards (tie)
5) Death Proof
6) Jackie Brown

I drove a shit-ton of boxes up to my parent's house on Monday (two long boxes and six files boxes). I got most of my comics, movies, and music up there. I'd say I still have two more boxes of movies, music, and books, two more long boxes, and another two of my big hardcover comics. Ugh. That doesn't include nick-knacks, video games, electronics, kitchen stuff, tools. Stupid consumerism...

Going with some Hip-Hop today.

Atmosphere - Guarantees
Not their most catchiest song, but I really like this one.

Outkast - B.O.B

As much as I love a few Outkast songs, I've come to realize I don't really like their albums as a whole. They could use someone to cut back on the filler and keep their albums from going all over the place.

Miah and I just came back from seeing District 9. It's pretty good. I was expecting an extended "documentary" about xenophobia, but after about 30 minutes, the documentary pretense drops and it goes to a movie about corporate greed and finally morphs into a full out action flick by the last third. The hand held camera stays throughout, but it's smooth and clear. The aliens kinda fall to the wayside and become just background scenery for the most part. They're just device to get the plot going. There are tons of instagibs and ingenious use of grav guns. Also, mechs. For a summer movie, you get a pretty good story and good action. Can't ask for more.

I was looking for a trailer, but I found this clip. I guess it's a short film that the director made that got turned in the District 9 movies.
